School Nursing service

What is it?

School Nurses

The service comprises three teams which includes school nurses, school health staff nurses, health care assistants and administrative staff.

We work closely with schools, social care and other health care professionals as well as general practitioners (GP). Our service is offered to all school aged children aged 5 to 19 who attend schools in Hillingdon.

School Nurses are qualified nurses with specialist training in child development and public health, and they lead the national healthy child programme. Our role is to assess your child’s health needs in partnership with you. We will plan and provide services which support you and your wider family as required.

School Health Staff Nurses

Community staff nurses work alongside school nurses and are registered nurses with special interest in child development, health promotion and the prevention of ill health. Both school nurses and staff nurses are skilled in areas such as the MEND programmes, enuresis, asthma/anaphylaxis and working with young people in schools.

Health Care Assistants

Health Care Assistants are trained to carry out vision, hearing and height and weight measurements for the national childhood measurement programme. The work closely along others in the team.

What do we do?

As part of the health child programme we ask you to complete a health questionnaire when your child starts school in reception class and again when they start secondary school in year 7 so that we can support you with any health concerns they may have.

We will work alongside you and your family with any parenting issues and guide you to find local services and groups that can also support you as a parent.
